Fulton, Miss. – Three Itawamba Community College sophomore baseball players have signed to continue their student-athlete careers: Will Verdung (Corinth), the University of Southern Mississippi; and Brady Davis (Hamilton) and Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville), both signing with Delta State University.
Verdung led the Indians in numerous offensive categories last season. His team highs were a .416 batting average, .512 on base percentage, .781 slugging percentage, 57 hits, 44 runs scored, 42 RBI, 18 doubles and 10 home runs. The starting third baseman had a .930 fielding percentage and picked up one win and two saves as a relief pitcher. His biggest day at the plate was a 5-for-6 performance against East Mississippi where he had two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI.
A left-handed pitcher, Davis has a 10-2 record with one save and 81 strikeouts in 97 innings pitched in two seasons with the Indians. With 81 strikeouts, he recorded five or more in eight games. Davis was selected to the All-MACCC Honorable Mention list last season. He earned MACCC and NJCAA Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing a no-hitter while striking out six batters in a 10-0 run rule win over Coahoma.
Martinolich batted .321 with 28 runs scored and 21 runs driven in as a freshman shortstop. He had a .904 fielding percentage with 11 errors on 114 chances. He went 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI in the Indians' 10-2 win at Southwest Mississippi and 4-for-4 with four runs scored in a 12-1 win over Coahoma.
The trio had strong showings during the preseason. The Indians went 8-1 during the fall and look to build on that momentum heading into the 2023 campaign.
