FULTON, MS – Itawamba Community College will open its fourth season under head football coach Jon Williams Thursday against the East Central Community College Warriors at 7:00 p.m. on Military Appreciation Night at Eaton Field.
"It's always an exciting week building up to the first game of the season," said Williams. "The guys seem to bring something extra in practice when it comes to getting ready for the lights to come on Thursday night."
Last season, the Indians opened the season against Warriors and came away with a rain-soaked 35-13 win in Decatur. Freshman QB Andrew Goodman (Charlotte, NC) passed for 358 yards and five touchdowns on 31-of-37 passing to earn Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Offensive Player of the Week honors.
"It's a whole new season," Williams commented. "We can't hang our hat on last year's success. East Central is a very good and well-coached football team and we'll have to be ready to go once that whistles blow or we'll be on the wrong end of a 35-13 final score."
The first game of the season brings a difficult week of preparation for the coaches.
"It's hard to get ready for a team when you haven't seen any film or stats on them," said Williams. "For us, it's going to be about protecting the football, executing on offense, and not giving up the big plays on defense. We have to maintain our focus and play our brand of football if we want to open the season with a win."
Military Appreciation Night
ICC will honor past and current members of the armed forces with special activities prior to the game as well as a salute during halftime.
"There is nothing like hearing our All-American Band playing the chop and seeing all the fans on their feet supporting the guys, and to be able to honor all the men and women along with their families that have sacrificed so much for us to be able to enjoy something as simple as football is one of many reason I'm proud to be a part the ICC family," Williams said about Military Appreciation Night.
Admission is free to all past and current armed forces members and their families.
