FULTON, Miss. – The losing streak continues for the Itawamba Community College Indians, who battled in the first half and were in striking distance late before ultimately falling 84-75 to Mississippi Delta Thursday night at the Davis Event Center.
Sophomore guard Lakee Westbrook (Shannon) hit five three-pointers on the night, and Louisiana-Lafayette signee Tyrone Wooten (Memphis, Tenn.) scored a team-high 17 points, but an early second half slide was too much to overcome, ending the Indians hope of halting what is now a six-game losing streak.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with the lead changing hands six times. The Indians (5-12, 1-5 MACJC North Division) led by as much as nine in the first half, but held a slim 30-27 lead at the break.
The Trojans took the lead and extended it to as much as 16 early in the second half, but Dee Gates (Baldwyn), Austin Timms (Mooreville) and Westbrook led a charge to put the game back within reach for the Indians. Westbrook hit a three-pointer with 44 seconds remaining to pull the Indians within five points, 78-73, but the Trojans took advantage at the charity stripe to pick up the victory.
Westbrook scored 16 points, followed by Timms with 12 and Gates with 11.
The Indians will wrap up what has been a rough month next Thursday in Clarksdale against Coahoma. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
