No. 10 Indians split with No. 13 Wallace-Hanceville

The No. 10 softball Indians moved to 7-5 on the year after splitting a doubleheader at No. 13 Wallace-Hanceville with a 5-2 win in 8 innings and dropping a 5-2 decision in the final game of the day.

Game 1: No. 10 Indians 5, No. 13 Wallace 2 (8 innings)

After five and a half innings of scoreless softball, Wallace broke through with a two-out double to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Indians answered when Joanna Vasquez (Southaven) executed a perfect squeeze play to score Hanna Sparks (Mantachie) to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh.

Wallace went three up, three down in the bottom half of the inning allowing the game to go to extra innings.

Mattie Meine (Olive Branch) and Rachel Sternisha (Olive Branch) both reached on fielder's choices with Hope Harbin (Columbus) and Jessica Davis (Cumberland) beating a pair of throws home to take a 3-1 lead. Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La.) singled to drive in Meine before Sternisha scored on a wild pitch to give the Indians a 5-1 advantage before Wallace could get out of the inning.

Wallace had a RBI single to make it a 5-2 contest and had bases loaded with one out before the Indians found the exit to pick up the three-run win in the first game of the day.

Olivia Burns (Grenada) improved to 3-2 on the year after giving up two runs on six hits while striking out five in eight innings of work. Conley and Davis each had a pair of hits in the Indians' seven-hit performance.

Game 2: No. 13 Wallace 5, No. 10 Indians 2

ICC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single by Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) that scored Sternisha. Wallace answered in a big way by scoring five run on four hits, including a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning.

Harbin hit a sacrifice fly to plate Vasquez in the second to make it a 5-2 game.

Neither team could get anything going the rest of the day allowing the Wallace to earn the split with the 5-2 win in the final game of the day.

Vasquez went two-for-three with a stolen base while Harbin and Cox each drove in a run.

The Indians are scheduled to be back in action Saturday doubleheader at Snead State - weather pending - with the First American National Bank opening pitch scheduled for noon in Boaz, Alabama.
