FULTON, Miss. - No. 14 Itawamba swept East Mississippi on Tuesday, rolling to a five-inning win in the opener before Zoe Goodman's two-out walk-off single gave the Indians a 2-1 win in Game 2.
Game 1: No. 14 Indians 17, East Mississippi 0 (5 innings)
ICC stayed in control early, then buried the opener in the fourth.
The Indians scored once in the second when Taylar Shands grounded out to bring home AB Marlar, then added another in the third when Alana Dossey reached on a fielder's choice that scored Skylar Partlow.
That 2-0 lead turned into a blowout in the fourth.
ICC sent 20 batters to the plate and scored 15 runs in the inning. Shands started the surge with a three-run homer to right. Victoria Fields later drew a bases-loaded walk, and a Lions error brought in another run. Marlar followed with a grand slam to right. Emarie Boddie added an RBI single, Campbell Guin followed with another run-scoring single, Neely Hodum drove in two with an inside-the-park home run, Fields doubled in a run, and Marlar capped the inning with an RBI single.
Marlar finished with five RBIs on two hits. Lizzie Meeks worked four scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out seven without a walk.
Game 2: No. 14 Indians 2, East Mississippi 1
The second game came down to the last out.
EMCC scored first in the second on a sacrifice bunt and held the 1-0 lead until the fourth, when ICC tied it. Shands popped up a sacrifice fly to short that scored Morgan Green and evened the game at 1-1.
That score held all the way to the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs, Fields lined a triple to center and gave ICC one more chance. Goodman came up next and worked the count full before lining a 3-2 pitch over a leaping shortstop into left. Fields scored from third, and the Indians walked it off.
The hit finished a strong day in the circle for Ramsey Montgomery. She went all seven innings, allowed one hit and one unearned run, struck out 10 and walked one.
Up next, the No. 14 Indians will host No. 1 Pearl River on Friday. The Guaranty Bank opening pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be available on LetsGoICCTV.com/red.
