No. 13 Itawamba ran into a tough afternoon on the road Saturday, falling to No. 5 Copiah-Lincoln in both games.
WESSON, Miss. - No. 13 Itawamba ran into a tough afternoon on the road Saturday, falling to No. 5 Copiah-Lincoln in both games.
Game 1: No. 5 Co-Lin 8, No. 13 Indians 0 (6 innings)
The Wolves took control in the second and never let ICC settle in.
Co-Lin broke the scoreless game open with a three-run single in the bottom of the second, then added two more runs in the third. One came home on an ICC error and another scored on a sacrifice fly as the Wolves stretched the lead to 5-0.
That was more than enough support for Co-Lin, while the Indians never found the offensive answer they needed to climb back into the opener.
"I'm really disappointed by today's outcome," Coach Carson Owens said. "I'm disappointed that I didn't have us prepared to play. It's a great softball environment and I didn't have our team ready to play. We have to take it, learn and move on to what's ahead."
Game 2: No. 5 Co-Lin 11, No. 13 Indians 3 (5 innings)
The second game followed a similar path early before ICC finally answered in the fourth.
The Wolves scored first on an RBI double in the opening inning, then created separation in the second. An RBI double brought in one run before a three-run homer pushed the lead out to 5-0. Co-Lin added a solo homer in the third and carried a 7-0 advantage into the fourth.
That was when the Indians showed some life.
Ella Duhon and AB Marlar both scored on an Emarie Boddie double to left, trimming the deficit to 7-2. Later in the inning, Ann Thomas Luke lined a single to right to bring home Boddie and cut the margin to 7-3.
Co-Lin answered from there and closed out the sweep.
Even after the losses, Owens pointed straight to the next challenge waiting back in Fulton.
"We are fired up for another ranked match up at Andy Kirk Field," Owens said. "Northeast is a great team so we will have to play well. I'm excited to see our fight."
Up next, the Indians return home Wednesday to host rival No. 20 Northeast at Andy Kirk Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on LetsGoICCTV.com/red.
