No. 14 Indians Drop Doubleheader at No. 6 Jones
No. 14 Itawamba dropped both games of Saturday’s MACCC doubleheader at No. 6 Jones, falling 13-8 in Game 1 and 8-7 in Game 2.
ELLISVILLE, Miss. - No. 14 Itawamba dropped both games of Saturday's MACCC doubleheader at No. 6 Jones, falling 13-8 in Game 1 and 8-7 in Game 2.
Game 1: No. 6 Jones 13, No. 14 Indians 8
ICC opened the scoring in the first when Victoria Fields hit a solo home run to center field.
Jones answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and added to its lead in the second. The Indians cut into the deficit in the third when Emarie Boddie hit a grand slam to left field, scoring Alana Dossey, Fields and Maddie Porter to make it 6-5.
Jones added a solo home run in the bottom of the third before ICC moved back in front in the fourth. Gracyn Snell scored on a passed ball before AB Marlar hit a two-run home run to center field, giving the Indians an 8-7 lead.
Marlar's home run set the program's single-season home run record.
Jones regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run home run and added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Fields, Boddie and Marlar homered for ICC. Alanee Wheeler pitched four innings in relief, allowing seven hits and seven runs, six earned, with no walks.
Game 2: No. 6 Jones 8, No. 14 Indians 7
ICC scored four runs in the first inning of Game 2. Fields doubled to score Dossey, Boddie singled to score Fields and Duhon singled to score Porter and Marlar.
Jones cut the lead to 4-2 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first.
The Indians added a run in the second when Boddie doubled to right field to score Porter. ICC stretched the lead to 7-4 in the fourth on bases-loaded walks from Boddie and Duhon.
Jones tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Jones scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on an error.
ICC outhit Jones 12-7. Dossey, Marlar, Duhon, Boddie and Porter each had two hits for the Indians.
"I was really proud of how we swung the bats," ICC head coach Carson Owens said. "I thought we had really good approaches to every pitcher they rolled out there. If we can carry that into the regional tournament, I like where we are at."
The Indians now turn their attention to postseason play and another matchup with Jones.
"This is the time of year where you are hoping everything can click," Owens said. "I hope that happens for us this weekend. We have all the tools to make a run, so I'm excited to see what we can do."
The two teams will meet again Friday in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament hosted by Pearl River.
