ELLISVILLE, MS – The Lady Indians opened the second half of the season with a big night in south Mississippi as they defeated the Lady Bobcats 86-81.
Jayla Chills (Ripley) hit the first basket of the New Year for the Lady Indians (10-2, 2-0) which led to a 12-0 run over the first four minutes of the contest. The early lead was extended to as much as 22-points in the first half with Kaelin Kneeland (Olive Branch) and Chills leading the charge.
At halftime, the Lady Indians were up by 20-points, 57-37, but a 15-3 Lady Bobcat run to start the second half cut the deficit to 8-points. However, the Lady Indians were able to extend the lead back to double digits on an Erika Toney (Horn Lake) jumper. The Lady Indians held off the surging Lady Bobcats for most of the half, but a late run pulled them within 4-points with under a minute to play. With time running out, the Lady Bobcats were fouling, but the Lady Indians took advantage of the free throws to pick up the 86-81 win.
Chills, who picked up her eleventh double digit scoring effort of the season, led the Lady Indians with 22-points, followed by Kneeland with 17-points. Kneeland also picked up 12-rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Hooker and Toney rounded out the scoring as they chipped in 10-points each.
The Lady Indians will face another tough road test Thursday as they travel to Nashville, TN for a battle with Volunteer State. Tip-off against the Lady Pioneers is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
